Great reply. We also heavily use S3, and one nice advantage (although not free) was the recent enabling of their CDN named Cloudfront (http://aws.amazon.com/cloudfront/ http://aws.amazon.com/cloudfront/) helped latency on requests for assests from S3. It was nearly turnkey to enable & benefit from.
