I guess we need to go to back to socketed eeprom chips. Or just in general machines that are wholly controlled by the owner.

  Don't be silly, they can't put a subscription on an eeprom ;)

  A physical jumper or switch to enable/disable writing to the firmware flash could end a lot of these kinds of problems.
