Well they recently published the AT protocol that they use. It’s an open protocol, so they’re going for some kind of community angle maybe? They could probably sell instances like mastodon, but I don’t think that will scale how they probably want. I think they will eventually find a way to either monetize the data or add an ad extension to AT proto.
