Why is it unfortunate? Minecraft is a great game when it comes to socializing and problem solving, and it's available to families who can't afford legos.

- INTPenis 2y agoIt is great, but kids need those delicate motor skills too. They're trading one set of skills for another. They get good at moving things around on a tablet, with a mouse, and a joystick, but they lack the practical motor skills of placing blocks ontop of each other and imagining how to build a house from bricks IRL.
- crazygringo 2y agoI grew up with Legos but I don't think they did anything for my delicate motor skills. The blocks don't require precision to snap together. You're not using tweezers or anything. If delicate motor skills are something that needs developing, it seems like handwriting and drawing and painting are going to be infinitely more effective than building with Legos, no?
- chpatrick 2y agoI think that's a false dichotomy. They can play Minecraft and still get fine motor skills from something else.
- INTPenis 2y agoWell yeah of course but the discussion here is on Minecraft and Lego specifically. But realistically a lot of kids today are getting much less practical motor skills building things, and a lot more specific fine motor skills controlling video game interfaces. I think building things has a much wider range of motor skills than using UIs.
