Stumbled upon, or maybe just forced: if you're intent on rusticating former scholars, you almost have to build from the bottom up. (in entirely unrelated news, HN turned up a FOIA release that said, at least decades ago, that one of the US intelligence communities largest problems in recruiting was that none of the most skilled candidates, language and culture-wise, ever got given clean enough political reliability marks to actually hire) One thing I've heard is that institutionalised favouritism could mitigate the Peter Principle: eg, the english may have been more or less competent in the top spots of their empire, but the whole edifice was run staggeringly competently at the level of scots, irish, welsh, colonial, and native administrators. (I think LJP explicitly states the potential value of glass ceilings in his book, so someone must've had checked in the meantime?)

Fwiw I don't think the Brits had a equivalent (on paper) process of sending a mildly disgraced admin to the colonies as a common soldier. If anything, the process was more aligned withe p-principles, modulo the too common examples of eg TE Lawrence decommissioning himself to Aircraftman and later commentators eliding citations (case studies: ) Lagniappe would be how the heirloom of smuggled jules Verne from the elder liu was pivotal ?

    Do people still read JGV? I've read "Journey..." twice now (alas no times in FR), but I'm pretty close to 大刘's generation. Wonder what his father had done? (also puts https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Village_Teacher_(short_story) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Village_Teacher_(short_sto... in perspective) G&S' The Mikado has a Victorian fantasy of the punishment fitting the crime; if so, I'd guess working conditions might be much safer if the designers had any idea they might be labouring in their own creations someday — if not, at least it beats the reputed 焚书坑儒*! Edward VIII abdicated rather than playing his part ("England Expects..." etc.; should he have been resigned to looking at the ceiling and thinking of England?), but I suppose you're right: these exceptions are (in)famous because they were. I think the common sol'n, at least in Edwardian and later times, was to send too-disgraced younger relatives off to the farther colonies to live as "remittance men".         The Nautilus as predecessor to the Arcadia? If his propaganda turns out to be more effective than 林白乐's, maybe I'll have to call him 刘仙?
