Daylighting a Brook in the Bronx
- rmason 2y agoWhen I was in college I started researching my families history. I remember visiting a cemetery in Detroit with my father looking for a particular grave. Mentioned to my Dad that this ancient cemetery was so different than the rest of the city. It is hilly and where did all these rivers come from? He laughed and said Detroit is full of rivers but they've all been buried. Plus all the hills have been leveled. When Detroit went bankrupt there was a lot of hope and online discussions. One thing mentioned was to daylight some or all of Detroit's rivers. Combined with all the vacant houses in need of demolition you could reimagine the entire city. I got excited about that idea, even bought a map showing all the buried rivers. Sadly it was never to be. Fun fact there is a river that goes under a skyscraper downtown. The story goes if you go into the second sub-basement and open a grate in the floor you can see (and hear) the water flowing. Unfortunately there is no easy way to confirm it.
