2 is not any kind of requirement to show one's work on HN.
- fsflover 2y agoDid I say otherwise? The OP asked for "best way to have successful results", not requirements. The first point is also not a requirement btw.
- tptacek 2y agoThe best way to have successful results showing work on HN is to build something that is interesting (does something neat, is immediately useful, solves important problems, &c) that HN readers can immediately interact with. Availability of source code usually doesn't have much of anything to do with it. You are better off posting a strong interactive experience and a good writeup than you are posting the source code. If you post something that isn't "FLOSS", 2 or 3 people will complain about that in the comment threads, before they're (usually) flagged off the thread. Open source is great, but promoting open source is not in fact a goal of HN.
- fsflover 2y ago> The best way to have successful results showing work on HN is to build something that is interesting This is sort of obvious. Do you really expect that the OP didn't know that? > Availability of source code usually doesn't have much of anything to do with it. Half of the top Show HN posts are about FLOSS software. In the other half, some are not about software. So your claim is wrong.
- tptacek 2y agoYes. It's a subtle point that a lot of people have trouble with. I'm confident about what I'm saying, for a variety of reasons. "Show HN" is a category that happens to optimize for people doing open source software, but the top posts on the site generally aren't "Show HN"'s, and "open source" is absolutely not a rule of "Show HN".
