I can't remember what company it was (and failed to turn it up on search), but someone (a streaming service, I think?) claimed, in a press release, how excited they were to have the highest number of users or downloads or account signups (or whatever) since launch. On the day after launch, if memory serves. Whatever the exact details, the circumstance was essentially, "we're pretending this is a meaningful metric," when it clearly wasn't because there was no history against which to compare. Gotta juice those numbers and make the Street happy by any means necessary. The system is broken, but oh well.
