Elon Musk's Engineering Principles – The 5 Step Process (2021)
- gnabgib 2y ago(2021)
- whaaaaat 2y agoTesla was just found to be the most dangerous car brand, at literally double the national average of fatalities per billion miles. (National average 2.8, Tesla 5.6 fatalities per billion miles.) The model Y has above 10 fatalities per billion miles. Insurance companies are refusing to insure the Cybertruck and some places are refusing to allow them to park. People have burned alive in Tesla vehicles because they couldn't figure out how to open the doors. I don't know that engineering principles that lead to horrific deaths and uninsurable vehicles are sound engineering strategies. And I know some folks are going to say, "but spaceX!" To which I'll say, "Gwynne Shotwell runs that show. That company does everything it can to avoid letting Musk touch things". Twitter has been steadily declining. Their competitors are absolutely skyrocketing in popularity in no small part to engineering decisions at Twitter. (Though, admittedly, that one is probably less an engineering failure than a policy one.) But what about the Boring Company, they've... made a few small tunnels I guess? If these are the results of his engineering principles, I think maybe there's good reason to consider whether they might actually be more harmful than beneficial.
- YZF 2y agoI like the principles and I do like my Tesla Model 3. https://www.roadandtrack.com/news/a62919131/tesla-has-highest-fatal-accident-rate-of-all-auto-brands-study/ https://www.roadandtrack.com/news/a62919131/tesla-has-highes... "The study's authors make clear that the results do not indicate Tesla vehicles are inherently unsafe or have design flaws." ... "So, why are Teslas — and many other ostensibly safe cars on the list — involved in so many fatal crashes? “The models on this list likely reflect a combination of driver behavior and driving conditions, leading to increased crashes and fatalities,” iSeeCars executive analyst Karl Brauer said in the report. “A focused, alert driver, traveling at a legal or prudent speed, without being under the influence of drugs or alcohol, is the most likely to arrive safely regardless of the vehicle they’re driving." EDIT: https://www.iseecars.com/most-dangerous-cars-study#v=2024 https://www.iseecars.com/most-dangerous-cars-study#v=2024 Model 3 not on the list. There aren't a lot of details on the methodology. I'd like to see someone else crunch the numbers.

- anonyme-honteux 2y agoIs that how the CyberTruck was designed? I would pass
- readthenotes1 2y agoThat I see any on the road around me means I see an astounding number on the road around me...
- chasing 2y agoThey're common in places I go. And once the "that's interesting" factor wears off, they just kind of look unbalanced and awkward to my eyes. Sort of the physical embodiment of someone with no taste trying to be cool. The automotive equivalent of ab implants. People around here talk a tremendous amount of shit about them, which is pretty funny.
- blastonico 2y agoMaybe Starship, I would take it.

- readthenotes1 2y agoRight? He's a big fan of factories and factories just produce wage labor and proletariat. Unless they're owned by the State and administered by the proles, in which case they are totally righteous.
- piva00 2y agoNot really a good counterpoint to being a fascist though, Nazis loved factories as well. While being a big factories guy he's not really a big fan of unions or following the laws and customs of countries with strong labour movement, hence the ongoing dispute with Tesla workshops in Sweden for over a year (with new breaches of the Co-Determination Act just last month [0]). You know who else hated unions? The Nazis :) [0] https://www.reuters.com/markets/europe/swedish-union-files-lawsuit-against-tesla-over-labour-conflict-2024-10-03/ https://www.reuters.com/markets/europe/swedish-union-files-l...
- readthenotes1 2y agoYou know who else hated the unions? The commies :-) (Just ask Lech Walesa)
- kreetx 2y agoSeems like an interesting take from someone who has first-hand experience in manufacturing. And nothing about politics.
- DemocracyFTW2 2y agoThat someone with first-hand experience is definitely not Musk whose only first-hand expertise is in conning people out of their money, and, of late, in tweeting hate speech and conspiracy theories 24/7

- MattPalmer1086 2y agoThere is a long history of fascism in the U.S. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fascism_in_North_America https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fascism_in_North_America

- DemocracyFTW2 2y agoSo, the K³ is just a bunch of well-meaning rubes who are genuinely worried about the welfare of their communities, also they like cosplay.

- chasing 2y agoHalf of that article is about how you shouldn’t treat the ideas of so-called geniuses as sacrosanct.
- anonyme-honteux 2y agoThe guy is a fascist, only a fool would NOT dimiss his ideas. Nothing personal, I would say the same thing for Henry Ford, a huge antisemite.
- whaaaaat 2y agoI think it's fair to deny his brilliance, totally independence of his politics. Don't confuse money with brilliance, and don't confuse "I can pay for the best minds" with "I am among the best minds".
- DemocracyFTW2 2y agoIf X is the paragon example of Musk's brilliant ideas for you, there's little incentive for me to try to convince you otherwise.
- swed420 2y ago> Try very hard to delete the part or process This becomes much easier if you don't find yourself in a primitive consumption-based economy. Everybody in these comments wants to hate on the "fascist" - I'm here to hate on the system that created him.
