...unlike with TOTP shared-secret methods, there is no possibility of "backing up" recovery codes or shared secrets -- per Wikipedia Lack of backup is a dealbreaker. We shouldn't be stripping sovereignty away from the user, we should be providing tools for them to manage it safely.
