All languages have small talk, which ought to suggest that it is not bullshit or something which is possible to eliminate, but is instead an indispensable part of human communication.
- nomnomnom 14y agoThe purpose of small talk is having a "harmless" way to get to know each other, to put out your feelers if you will. It's also great when stuck in an elevator, and so on. But that does not mean you have to be shallow or even dishonest, even when engaging in small talk, it just means you go slow, and err on the side of politeness. However, this might elude people who don't care much about honesty (See what I did there? Two can play the ad-hominem game ^^).
- nomnomnom 14y agoLolwhat? If any of you didn't catch the ad-hominen in the post I replied to, just ask, I can show it to you... but clicking the "pout" button won't help. Silly vampires, and the borrowed time they live on :(

- TimGebhardt 14y agoInterestingly, German doesn't really have a concept of small talk. It was a problem translating Paddington Bear from English to German: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-13545386 http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-13545386
- ville 14y agoInteresting. I found lots of similarities to Finnish culture in the article and Finnish language doesn't have a word for small talk either.
