It's really bizarre that we implicitly teach people that it's OK to hurt people, but not OK to defend yourself. I told my daughter's teacher that we fully intend to support her if she needs to fight back physically and the teacher seemed really surprised (mind you, she's a star student and not someone they think of as "trouble"). Of course, if people hurt her, it means the school failed in the first place.
