Ask HNs: Is Tyson vs. Paul Crashing Netflix?
I thought Netflix paid their engineers well. Their service is absolutely not doing well under this kind of load.
- tiffanyh 2y agoYour engineer comment is unwarranted. I’ll say though … Live streaming is a radically different tech challenge than serving static content. And this fight was the first live streaming event Netflix has ever done. Let’s not trash our HN friends, since many Netflix engineers are active on HN.
- JSDevOps 2y agoThey have done a few live shows maybe not of this magnitude
- nightowl_games 2y ago> And this fight was the first live streaming event Netflix has ever done. It's not. Theres been 'live reunion' for Love is Blind, and theres a chef guy that has a 'fully live' show. I agree the engineer comment is not phrased well but the main point I think is: clearly someone(s) at NFLX screwed up.
- restlessdesign 2y agoIt’s not unwarranted IMHO: you’re paying a premium for what is assumed to be top-tier talent and engineering rigor. It is reasonable to expect a higher return for that investment.
- tiffanyh 2y agoNetflix has a stellar tech track-record. One bad night and people talk crap. Now that’s not right.
- seb1204 2y agoI agree but this is what tech companies have made us into with their instant gratification expectation.
- mannykannot 2y agoFor the people who care about it (personally, I do not in this case, but there is others where I do), this is not just 'one bad night'; it is exactly the sort of event which justifies the premium. <curmudgeon> I see we are fully into the post-accountability world. </curmudgeon> At the very least, the customers deserve an explanation of what highly-improbable circumstance led to the unfortunate outcome, if the claim that "it's not right" is to be considered justified.
- s__s 2y agoThis is more so a business error than a technical one. They needed to take more baby steps up to an event of this magnitude.

- xenihn 2y agoYour participation in the multiple threads about this tonight is extremely suspicious if you're not someone who has a vested interest in preserving the integrity of Netflix's brand, as both a product and an employer.
- fragmede 2y agoif you have something to say, just come out and say it.

- chevman 2y agoGuess they should have live streamed it on X to be safe! ;)
- JSDevOps 2y agoAre you an engineer who could have done better?
