- gadders 2y agoRussian subs get caught as well: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-32333336 https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-32333336 I seem to remember this happening quite often (yearly, maybe?) during the Cold War in the North Sea and around Norway.
- mmooss 2y agoA US submarine surfaced under a tourist boat near Hawaii; many died iirc. I think it was around the 2000s.
- olejorgenb 2y agohttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ehime_Maru_and_USS_Greeneville_collision https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ehime_Maru_and_USS_Greeneville... > In a demonstration for some VIP civilian visitors, Greeneville performed an emergency ballast blow surfacing maneuver. As the submarine shot to the surface, she struck Ehime Maru. Within ten minutes of the collision, Ehime Maru sank. Nine of the thirty-five people aboard were killed: four high school students, two teachers, and three crew members.
- polishdude20 2y agoDo subs not have a sensor at the top that's able to detect things like ships right above them?
- Rinzler89 2y agoYes it's called a sonar. And would they even need to fire the sonar for that? Even using passive sonar they should be able to hear there's a boat above them considering how sensitive their sonars are. But operational mistakes can happen no matter how many sensors you have.
- mmooss 2y agoAlso there's the periscope. And radio to warn nearby vessels.

- krisoft 2y agoIf you are thinking about the USS Greeneville colliding with the Ehime Maru 10 miles (16 km) off the coast of Oahu, then that ship was a training ship not a tourist boat.
- sellmesoap 2y agoI remember hearing about this submarine collision back in the 90’s here in b.c. https://www.bst.gc.ca/eng/rapports-reports/marine/1994/m94w0078/m94w0078.html https://www.bst.gc.ca/eng/rapports-reports/marine/1994/m94w0... no fatalities thankfully, the scuttlebutt was that the insurance wouldn't cover a military accident.
- pmezard 2y agoAnd possibly https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bugaled_Breizh https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bugaled_Breizh as well.
- jillyboel 2y agoKill four innocent civilians and all that happened was one of the killers was "severely reprimanded"
