Ask HN: What's the best way to learn Ruby/Rails?
After coding web apps in PHP/CodeIgniter and Python/Django/Flask, I now want to give Ruby/Rails a try(just for sake of learning as I'm quite happy with django for most of my projects).
So I would like to know what is the best way to get started with both ruby and rails? Which books, tutorials, sites you would suggest for learning ROR?
- stollercyrus 14y agoYou should checkout Michael Hartl's http://ruby.railstutorial.org/ http://ruby.railstutorial.org/ and Ryan Bates's http://railscasts.com/ http://railscasts.com/
- Squanto 14y agohttp://ruby.learncodethehardway.org/book/ http://ruby.learncodethehardway.org/book/ was a godsend for me learning Ruby (and OOP in general). This link: http://net.tutsplus.com/tutorials/ruby/the-best-way-to-learn-ruby-on-rails/ http://net.tutsplus.com/tutorials/ruby/the-best-way-to-learn... is a strong starting point for rails.
- briandear 14y agoIn addition to the Hartl screencasts and book, I would recommend CodeSchool's Rails for Zombies 2 course. Pretty useful when combined with other resources.
- gyardley 14y agoIn addition to the other resources in this thread, I'm also finding the Ruby Koans (http://rubykoans.com/ http://rubykoans.com/) useful for drumming syntax into my head.
- olegious 14y agoFor me the biggest issue has been learning how to deploy apps onto my Linode server. I have no problems creating local apps, still haven't figured out what I'm doing wrong with deployment to production.
- brianritchie 14y agoYou could give Capistrano a try. Works wonders for deployments
- ashconnor 14y agoI definitely recommend watching this Railscasts for info on deploying: http://railscasts.com/episodes/335-deploying-to-a-vps http://railscasts.com/episodes/335-deploying-to-a-vps
- countessa 14y agoFor a quick intro to Rails, you can't go wrong with: http://guides.rubyonrails.org/getting_started.html http://guides.rubyonrails.org/getting_started.html Follow that up with Michael Hartl's already suggested book for a more in-depth walk through building an app. I wouldn't suggest Hartl's work if you just want a feel for it before you commit time to learning Rails proper because he does take you through a lot of git use and tdd before you get to the nitty-gritty of building your application. It's very thorough, but won't give you the immediate buzz of whipping up an app.
- omoijuanfo 14y agocheck out code school its pretty cool http://www.codeschool.com/courses/try-ruby http://www.codeschool.com/courses/try-ruby
- janogonzalez 14y agoFirst, get familiar with the language solving all the Ruby Koans http://rubykoans.com http://rubykoans.com Then go through the Rails Tutorial http://railstutorial.org http://railstutorial.org Finally, read Eloquent Ruby by Russ Olsen and The Rails 3 Way by Obie Fernández
