One symptom that I see that's super annoying (I'm thinking JS, but many languages have this problem) is that tooling seems to be getting worse. Incompatibility between CJS and ESM, for example. Each new issue like this that comes up seems to get frozen in place for longer and longer.
Nevermind getting a newer language with new useful concepts, can we just have a tooling ecosystem that isn't broken!
- markusw 2y agoThe Javascript tooling ecosystem seems especially broken. XKCD 927 [0] applies there, to build systems, frameworks, and more. I would suggest trying a different ecosystem entirely. I chose Go's, but there are many alternatives not nearly as broken, and in some cases working quite nicely. [0]: https://xkcd.com/927/ https://xkcd.com/927/
- hombre_fatal 2y agoThe JS ecosystem is getting better though. For example, Node moving to natively support ESM from a CJS require. So this doesn't fit in with the idea that AI is making things stagnate.
