What they note in this piece is absolutely true; it is really hard to just get an e-mail address anonymously these days. There are partial solutions like masked e-mail (Fastmail, Firefox, etc.) and sometimes one of those shady disposable e-mail websites has domains which aren't blocked, but just taking out a clean e-mail address somewhere is at best a lengthy process if they require some form of SMS confirmation (where you then use shady SMS receiving websites with low success rates for each listed number). Sometimes you just want to interact with some service from an online identity not linked to your private person. Reasons vary, but there are plenty of valid, legal reasons to do so (lack of trust, sensitive topic, research, etc.). I think being able to do that is quite important for society, but there sure are a lot of actors out there who wish this wasn't possible at all!
