Yep. I've had both polar reactions: "Wow that's really helpful. Your tool confirmed our model." And "Did you ask the PM first? You have to be careful with rabbit holes." I usually just do it if it'll be under a day's worth of work. It's never gone wrong and never gone to waste. At worst I and up copy/pasting the code into something else later
