It’s supposedly a “fallacy” and “arbitrary” and yet, 26 years after this prediction, the growing languages right now are Rust (compiled, statically typed systems language) and Python (dynamically typed glue code written by non-CS mathematics people). Maybe the distinction is not so arbitrary after all.
- cies 2y agoThough Python compiles to bytecode (pyc) and recently added optional typing. On the other side, Rust can be compiles to WASM, which can be considered a form of bytecode. If you look at Clojure (app lang w/o types, very dynamic) or Elm (strongly typed app lang that transpiles to a scripting lang), you'll find the situation today is even more whimsical than Ousterhout could have predicted.
