Something we’re going to have to recon with in our highly connected world is how do we talk about extreme views. I don’t think it’s right to ignore the influence say of someone like Nick Fuentes in modern discourse, but catastrophizing about people’s views, even when those people are close to power isn’t productive. Yes JD Vance is BFFs with some folks who are monarchists. How do you talk about that fact rationally? Similarly how do you talk about Musk and Trump’s flirtations with authoritarianism. I don’t think calling Trump a fascist is necessarily definitionally incorrect, but I also don’t think the discourse around it shapes public opinion in the ways people hope it does. If you want to win elections, you have to worry more about what is strategically effective, not why you’re technically correct.
