I think I might just yell “Timmahhhh” back loudly in the face of abuse to diffuse the situation and maybe even have a laugh and a fist bump. I don’t think the taunting teens travelling through UK cities are going to be swayed by a BBC opinion piece so it may be better to adopt a practical approach.
Though the onus should not be on the disabled person to have to do that type of work.
- khaki54 2y agoGeneralizing here, as kids in the U.S. we used to be taught to never mention or ask about someone's disability, no matter how curious we were. I definely remember a time later (with PSAs and all) where some of those who were disabled lamented that they were actually sad no one asked them about it, and everyone looked at them stone faced and grimly; but in fact they would rather answer questions and didn't mind a joke or two.
