I would much rather the phrase be something like, "don't take it too personally, we're all on the same team and even though I'm harsh, the goal is to improve your work." I know it doesn't roll off the tongue like "it's not personal, it's just business," but the problem is most of the time when I hear that particular phrase, I'm probably about to be screwed over in some way.
