I've never understood why people say sorry for cases like these?
- aniviacat 2y agoBecause without the sorry the comment may be interpreted in an aggressive/dismissive tone. For this issue, adding a sorry is an easy fix.
- scubbo 2y agoCan be a cultural idiomatic thing. For me (BrEng) "I'm sorry but..." doesn't explicitly mean "I regret/apologise for what I'm about to say" - in fact it's an intensifier.
- einsteinx2 2y agoIt can definitely be used that way in American English as well, though maybe less common?
- Alifatisk 2y agoYeah I am with you on this one, for me, it worsens the statement even more. Maybe because I've heard people use it in a way to be passive-aggressive.
