I posted this on reddit originally, but the responses seemed... naive?
So I built a speech to text chrome extension called Voicy and I can see which website's it's being used on...
I built it with the intention to help people with disabilities and finger/wrist pain (people like my dad) but it's basically just being used on AI NSFW pages.
Of course there are other users but my true power users are 90% porn. I guess they do only have 1 hand to type to be fair.
So now I'm wondering - what should I do? Lean into it? Ban on certain websites?
- theGeatZhopa 2y agointroduce a captcha for known porn-sites wont affect others
- KouroshGhaffari 2y agoSorry could you elaborate on that please? Just a captcha before they can use the product?
- theGeatZhopa 2y agoits an extension as i see. You told, you can see which sites your extension is used on. If its a porn site, make it unattractive to use your extension on such sites or accept/use that knowledge. one way of making it unattractive is to put a captcha or some distracting something before the text is put into the input-field. Or you accept that a multipurpose tool is used multipurpose :)
- thrw42A8N 2y agoWhy would he drive away his users?
- theGeatZhopa 2y agoit may be needed for certain markets and advertisements - the question should be pointed toward the OP. Why is he even asking that?? - lean into it corresponds to accept that smthg built by you is used for porn. - not lean into it corresponds to drive away his users. so, why is OP considering not to lean into and by that risking to drive away the users - should be the question :)
- thrw42A8N 2y agoIt's one thing to not lean into the use case, a completely another thing to make this group of users suffer through captcha just because you don't like them.
- theGeatZhopa 2y agoso, whats your solution for OP if he doesn't want to lean into? 1. stop them from using it there (= drive away users) 2. make them suffer by captcha on such sites (= drive away users, as you implied in your first answer) 3. lean into it (= let them use it on porn sites) I really don't get your intention. Do you mean OP should let them use the built tool?
- thrw42A8N 2y ago3. Leaning into it isn't just letting them be, it's making more specifically for these users and their use cases. 4. Just let them be...? OP, lean into it. Money is green regardless of what sound your tool generated.
- theGeatZhopa 2y agonow i get your point. "not leaning into it" means exactly and exclusively to stop the usage on porn-sites. There's no misinterpretation possible. Sort of EULA, specifically defining use cases or some "i don't lean into so please do not do that" wouldn't stop anyone. If there are no sanctions, no nag-screens, Captchas and no other ways to make the use of that extension on porn sites cumbersome - then it will be used on such sites. I don't know the reasons of OP is even asking it. Thus, i told to put a captcha on such sites. Having distracting captchas is a mild solution. Blocking is the hardest. Other than that, there's no way of "not leaning into" that would work. I may've over-read your solution of the problem and how OP could make it more specifically for these users and their use cases, in case he/she/it doesn't want to lean into...

- Fade_Dance 2y ago>I built it with the intention to help people with disabilities and finger/wrist pain (people like my dad) I certainly didn't get that impression from the landing page. It looks like a nice general purpose tool, and as you said, NSFW content is one of the major content areas on the internet. Why not just keep it general purpose and let users do with it what they will? if you did feel the need to lean into it, maybe you could split off another version specifically for that NSFW use case. I'm sure there are certain niche features that could be useful for... 1 handed use. Alternatively, you could repackage the extension and make it clear that it is for helping those with disabilities. That's sort of the mirror of the first idea I had. Have a general purpose extension and then have one that is specifically for disabilities. I don't know, just brainstorming. Something like this was always a likely outcome for the case in which your release actually gets picked up by the public. In other timelines it could have been used by groups of young kids for some obscure online video game or social media trend, some sort of click farming operation in a country that you know very little about, etc. Welcome to the internet. I think you probably do have a good name and a nice little site there (as your extension got discovered in the first place), so if I were you I would probably just continue making it the best extension that I could. If you don't care about the current use case, then don't specifically consider their needs in future releases, but I wouldn't block sites or do anything like that. What I would do is spend at least a tiny bit of time considering why those users are choosing your extension, in order to see if there's more juice in possibly pushing in those directions. Then I would move on.
- KouroshGhaffari 2y agoSo I exclusively marketed it on accessibility forums etc. and to be fair, a good chunk of users have come through there. But I got a wave of NSFW users out of nowhere and I can't find the source however hard I try. But I think you're right. I should just be happy that it's helping some people, regardless of the use-case. Thanks for taking the time to write such a thoughtful response!!
- theGeatZhopa 2y ago+1 I think its not your business, as long your product is used. Be happy with that.. I'll give it a try. I writing with just one hand and one finger right now. No, not because of porn hahahaha because og hackernews and i'm a hacker and the always type very fast hahaha I would sell it to the very porn-imperium. Its a hard usecase they can offer to their users :)
- bhouston 2y agoMake features for people who are willing to use and pay for your product. Do these users want to pay for your product? Can you make additional features for their use cases that will encourage them to pay for your product? If so then do it. I would suggest staying at arms length from that market in terms of your marketing, and instead let word of mouth or other forms of viral marketing in that community to be responsible for its growth there. Or lean even harder into it and create an AI NSFW website that uses this. Basically make it your competitive advantage. Just make sure it is all legal. The OnlyFans owner is absurdly rich.
- KouroshGhaffari 2y agoI just pushed pricing live last Friday, so it's yet to be proven whether they'll pay for the product. They definitely use it, but paying for it is different. If they do end up paying, I'd actually consider leaning into it hard by potentially creating a NSFW clone of the current thing
