The changes in vibes – why did they happen?
- ggm 2y agoInteresting list. I'd rather not try to knock it down, or agree, I just think its a good basis to talk. I think there's a component of risk for people to say "I don't like this" and to be D in an R context of your surrounds demanded inviting confrontation. Given how widespread current R views on things like jobs-n-guns are, the deep seated resentments of welfare help for immigrants, belief in the fear side of widespread job hollowing, standing up and saying "I think the D arguments are kinder" invited high risk response. Saying "yea I'll align with this R guy who says he can fix it" was just easier in every way: less contention, part of the in-group, communally mutual. It would plain I am a D guy. I am not in the USA and I am not american, so I'm an outsider view on this. Some of these forces play in Australia where I do live and I see this a lot: people seek validation in their immediate surroundings. The gang around the bully aren't naturally bullies themselves, they just don't want to be isolated from their peers. It would also be plain I don't think he can fix the problems he's claimed day #1 he can fix. He can't, without creating states of being worldwide which are equally bad, equally risky and probably will backfire on the voters who backed him. But thats a problem for another day. He said he could, and people liked that. I think the DNC is incapable of fixing its gerontocracy. The vote on the left has splintered, and now dies on it's own lack of unity, incumbency in the leadership and the differences between themselves, and what ordinary people experience. Welcome to a new underclass. dis-enfranchised others, who do the bad jobs, for low pay, and many people will be happy because they got theirs. I don't like it. "fixing" china by applying tarrifs won't bring jobs back to america. "fixing" ukraine by giving up defending ukraine will bring russia directly to the borders with NATO. Taiwan won'tbe invaded but Americans no longer can be relied on to defend it, and the middle east is in flames, and fuel will be poured on the fire. AUKUS won't happen, Australia will shelter under US crewed nuclear power, not own its own, and there won't be any jobs in this because the willingness to fund the partnership will evaporate. Domestic US politics do not create good states of US foreign policy, basically. I actually don't think Harris lost this for being a woman. I think in the end, it didn't come down to him vs her, it came down to R vs D and the voters actually wanted more of the R arguments than the (fractured) D arguments. "It's morning in america" worked. I wonder how long before regret sets in?
