What? I swear just yesterday there was a submission claiming the current avg age is like 56 years, up from 40...
Edit: there it is: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=42048640 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=42048640
Also, this particular cnbc article uses average and median interchangeably within the first two sentences, so whatever...
- gnabgib 2y agoIt's from the same report.. this one is about first-time homebuyers ie people on average wait until they're 38 to buy a house (this was noted in yesterday's article too, "median age of first-time buyers also rose from 35 to 38"). The other is about the age of all home purchasers, since many buy again (upgrade/downgrade size, change school district, move, retire) they'll be counted more than once and the age will be higher. An empty nester selling a McMansion for a town house pulls this up.
- not_your_vase 2y agoOh, I see, thanks. I really stopped reading this one after the avg/median mixup, didn't realize that these are talking about mostly the same thing.
- codingdave 2y agoNo, 56 is the average of all buyers. First-time buyers are a subset of that, and are younger.
