An entirely useful and thoughtful writeup (and not really all that political) -- why was it flagged? Just one nitpick, in regard to the pronouncement at the very top: One thing about Germany, and Europe in general, is that it’s relatively left-wing when compared to the US. Europe's pragmatic social policies constitute what America thinks of as as left-wing. But really that's a statement more about the US than it is about Europe. To most Europeans, these policies are basically common sense, the outcome of decades of political consensus (give or take certain differences about exactly how to tune the dials).
