Poor fanfic long predates the "Backrooms" phenomenon. Its not harmful, or unique to our culture; its just cringe.
If anything its training ground for people to improve their writing. Plenty of authors and writers started on eye-wateringly bad fanfic.
Calling it a "memetic virus" is SCP-like fanfic in and of itself. So, maybe this is a self-referential meta-bit.
- wruza 2y agoWhy is it even cringe? Do you really cringe from backrooms stories and videotape reports on yt? Also curious how it compares to regular popular tv horrors. Are these cringe too?

- cdchn 2y agoThe long-tail of Backrooms & SCP fanfic is whats cringe, like the article describes.
- Jerrrrrrry 2y agoYall should run your own experiments and let the Backrooms' endless datum of frivolous fictitious information stunt a child's most crucial time of intellectual growth, facilitated by an indifferent giga-corp specializing in robbing attention from humans.
- Jerrrrrrry 2y agodownvotes without replies mean you agree and are too cowardly too admit either defeat or to cognitively dissonant to respond
- wruza 2y agoSometimes people use them to sink obvious (to them) nonsense without spending too much time on it. Arguing with downvotes does no good here, also people posted more than enough answers if you ever wanted to reflect on them. I'd summarize it as "relax, we don't think so and don't need this scary adversarial memetic attack idea". You think it's true, others think it's not. Dealing with it is a great part of a forum life. You mentioned that you studied this topic. Afair, it's a common phenomenon for students to start seeing what they study irl. E.g. medical students diagnose themselves with all sorts of exotic diseases in around their third year. Maybe you just need to step back from it a little?
- Jerrrrrrry 2y agoNone of the replies were answers, just deflections. You cannot reflect on a deflection, that is oxymoronic. I have made clear, concise points, and 0 of them were addressed, merely dismissed. I have biases, I even admitted insofar as calling others out on their lack of interest, or incentive for self-denial. Dismissing ideas is not addressing them. There are people reading this text right now who have let this "harmless idea" take up the diminishing attention span of their children, filling it with a literal endless maze of fictional noise. Memes aren't serious? But "Russia" used "them" to elect "Trump"...possibly twice, by the time this gets read. Let's just keep this experiment going then, since I am wrong and everyone else right. Youtube content converging unto an attention stealing, click-farming, bottom-less, intellectually adversarial content, squandering the most crucial development time-frame for our progeny is something I just made up. Or, I am the only person who isn't in denial? But I would be ELATED to be wrong and find out letting kids get raised by youtube psychopaths is actually no worse than Teletubbies. I love being wrong more than I like being right, unfortunately. Please point out where anything I actually claimed wasn't anything less than dismissed.
- squigz 2y agoYou know, a simpler explanation would be that people just think you're wrong and don't want to spend their time arguing with a random Internet user about a damn horror meme.
- cruffle_duffle 2y agoWriting and video skills. I’m pretty sure plenty of people scored their first job with some demo reel they made in blender.
- Jerrrrrrry 2y agoI 100% agree with this but that is almost as if to say, "lrn2code", which cannot work at scale, being the sole benefit of a particular memetic virus.
- Jerrrrrrry 2y ago>Poor fanfic long predates the "Backrooms" phenomenon. Its not harmful, or unique to our culture; its just cringe. It is unique, it is harmful, and your bias of "cringe" indicates something you are too cowardly to admit. Why is it cringe? Think about my post again, consider my points in good faith. There is fanfic, then there is parasitic bread-tube perverted incentives being so systematic they endanger our society via literal intellectual retardation. >Calling it a "memetic virus" is SCP-like fanfic in and of itself. I'd say "Q.E.D" but I'll let you pause on the irony of this context.
