Unfortunately there are specific carveouts under US law to allow political spam. The politicians made the rules and exempted themselves from it, go figure.
On Android/Pixels, their spam blocking is actually really good and catches 90% of political spam (a few do get through). I tried to use an iPhone for a while but the spam was so bad I had to switch back to Pixel just for the (much better) political spam blocking.
I made the mistake of donating a few thousand dollars last election cycle, and now I get dozens/hundreds of spam messages from different candidates. One day I'll change my phone number and never let it get into the voter or donor rolls again... the entire system is purposely set up to screw the little guy over so that the politicians can get their donations/bribes.
- HenryBemis 2y agoDo you need to give a phone number when you donate? Could you make your donation without giving them email & phone number? (visited US tens of time for business but never lived/voted there so I have no idea) Would it be possible to use throwaway/secondary phones and/or emails? (and keep that old Nokia in a drawer and take it out once every election cycle)
- solardev 2y agoI don't remember for sure. But a lot of times it'll be resold and then recombined with other lists anyway. Like there's probably only one person of my name in my county, maybe even state. They just spam and spam and spam. If the politics mean that much to you, yeah maybe a burner phone and temporary mailbox. I am not sure if that's strictly legal though. Personally I just won't donate again. Can't really compete with Musk money anyway lol.
