While I think the motivation described in the article is stupid, some EVs would benefit from at least one additional gear ratio. I own a 2023 Nissan Leaf, the max RPM of the motor, and the gearing chosen by the manufacturer limit the top speed (to ~90mph). While it's pretty high, it would occasionally be useful to have a higher speed for momentary maneuvering.
