Unintended consequence: more crowds standing around as close to the boarding line as they can get so they can jump in line ASAP when their boarding group is called. There's probably a near 100% overlap between the type of people who try to sneak on the plane before their group is called, and the type of people who won't be content to sit quietly in their terminal seat before their boarding group is called. I'm usually Group 4 (AA credit card perk). When my group is called there's ALWAYS a ring of people 3-5 deep gathered in the boarding area.
