What the rising popularity of Yemeni coffee shops says about third places
- rmason 2y agoThis is something I've witnessed personally as two Yemeni coffee shops have opened up in the East Lansing area. I am not a coffee drinker but you can clearly see these places are popular and getting good reviews. There have always been a lot of Arab based coffee shops in Dearborn which is a suburb of Detroit. Likewise in Detroit itself I remember as a kid there was an area of downtown called Greektown which was full of Greek coffee shops. My late father used to frequent one of them to write up his sales reports. Lots of old Greeks in there playing cards. Today Greektown is a heavily touristed area with Greek restaurants, souvenir shops and a casino. The coffee shops can no longer compete with the rising rents.
