I think the issue is that a lightning cable and socket aren't physically designed to take the stresses of being plugged in and being used like a mouse at the same time. I've not measured it, but I could believe there is probably quite a bit of repeated vertical and sideways stress on a wired mouse's cable where it joins to the mouse body.

Apple charging cables aren't designed to be plugged into anything. Their cables are notoriously terrible. I had a lightning cable on my nightstand that I plugged my phone into at night a few times a week. After less than two years the connector had developed cracks. Inexcusable.
