Right now, the Apple computer lineup is totally out of alignment for me. The iMac is too small and the laptops are too big. I'd like a minimum 27" display for the iMac, maybe 31". For a laptop, give me something more portable, like the old 2 pound, 12" MacBook.
- el_benhameen 2y agoI love the idea and form of an ultraportable laptop, but I’ve had to face the reality that even a 13” monitor is just too small for me to be productive on complex development tasks. My eyesight isn’t good enough to handle tiny fonts, which could be part of the disconnect. What kind of work are you able to get done on a 12” screen?
- euroderf 2y agoAFAICT the 11" Mac Air failed in the market. It did not last long in the lineup.
- t3rabytes 2y agoIt was available for 6 years (2011-2017), that's hardly a failure relative to other Apple products that have only made it through 2 cycles (the most recently iPhone Mini sub-family that lasted 2 years).
- euroderf 2y agoOK, my bad.
- hartator 2y agoMacBook 12" was super sweet though. I bought 2 for professional engineering work. They were my main computers despite Intel CPUs being absyammal in term of performance.
- space_oddity 2y agoIt would be fantastic if Apple brought back that 27-inch or larger iMac for desktop users who don’t need a separate display
- yreg 2y agoThe 5k iMac used to be an incredible deal considering usual Apple pricing and the quality of the screen. I miss it.
- space_oddity 2y agoDisplay was stunning!
- wingworks 2y agoI used to always buy MBP's, but the new gen are all those super thick and heavy models. I tried one and couldn't get used to the thickness or weight. At that point I may as well get a desktop. I ended up buying M2 new MBA (from intel MBP), screen size similar enough, thickness good, weight good. And M2 is fast enough for 99% of the things I do. I did max the RAM to 24GB and wish there was more sometimes, and would love a faster SSD. Bot overall very happy.
- rswail 2y agoI just replaced my 10(!) year old 15" MBP with a new 16" (M3, but I needed it at the time, and the difference between M3 and M4 is not enough to worry me). It's almost exactly the same size and weight, I prefer the shape of the old MBP, but the new one is perfectly fine. However, the old one had replacement SSD and was on its second replacement battery, not sure I can do that with the new one.
- fouc 2y agoI don't know if you already know this, but speed of SSD is dependent on size of SSD and also by how much of the drive is empty. Once it's more than 50% full it starts slowing down. I created a separate partition to deliberately leave 30% of the drive unallocated.
- doublepg23 2y agoWhy not get a Mac Mini and external 32” display? It should be refreshed this week with rumors of a redesign.
- Koshkin 2y agoNot if you want an M4
- caseyy 2y agoIt will come.
- magarnicle 2y agoHopefully by the end of this week.
- doublepg23 2y agoI believe it'll release tomorrow or Wednesday? Leaks aren't always accurate but it would be pretty strange if the iMac got a refresh and not the mini.
- astrodust 2y agoThe Mini is such a potent little machine.
- weebull 2y agoIt should be for that price.
- brailsafe 2y agoYou'd be surprised (maybe) how few monitors there are in particular categories. In terms of successors to the older 30" screens at 16:10, or 6k screens of any kind, or simply 5k screen with even some of an assortment of niche quality attributes, there's usually like 1 single offering. I'm still rocking my Dell U3011 from 10 years ago alongaside my 2019 13" MBP with an i5, and occasionally I look at upgrading, but never find something sufficiently compelling that ticks whichever boxes I'm looking for. For example, I don't want an ultrawide, and I'd prefer IPS quality at around 30-32", and for it to be better than my current screen it'd need to be at least 120hz with <3ms response time and/or retina density, for a relatively modest budget, and for what's available I just end up deciding I'm fine with what I got until it's dead.
- fensizor 2y ago13 inch Air is small enough. Get yourself an iPad if it's still big for you ffs
- sam29681749 2y agoiPad's form factor (ie, not a clamshell) makes coding from train, couch, bed, impractical. I think there are cases you can get that turns them into a clamshell on the other hand.
- Schiendelman 2y agoApple's keyboard for the ipad does this.
- sam29681749 2y agoIf you're talking about the magic keyboard, I wouldn't consider that a clamshell. I mean it opens like this: _ < L
- Schiendelman 2y agoHow long has it been since you've used one? They're basically a laptop.
- sam29681749 2y ago~2 months ago. A typical laptop is more stable when sitting on my lap, etc.
- Schiendelman 2y agoYeah, that's true enough. I try pretty hard to be more ergonomic so I probably haven't run into it!
- newsclues 2y agoI miss the old small MacBook Air https://support.apple.com/en-ca/112441 https://support.apple.com/en-ca/112441 But it would have been nice to get a device more like the mini Sony Vaio device of old with tons of ports, so you have a mini workstation to add a large display and inputs
- dcre 2y agoiPad Pro with Magic Keyboard might not be too far off for the tiny laptop one. Though those are 11” and 13”, and you’re on iOS instead of macOS.
- thenaturalist 2y ago> For a laptop, give me something more portable, like the old 2 pound, 12" MacBook. MacBook Airs or your iPad Pro is perfectly portable. Absolutely love, love, loooove Apple finally upped the MBPs to 14 inch. Such a QoL improvement over 13inch. I'd never buy a 12 inch computer, ever.
- knutwannheden 2y agoChanging screen sizes appears to be a very common theme for Apple. That way they can a few years later re-introduce the old screen sizes as the best invention since sliced bread. Very annoying. I would also have liked to see a 24"+ model.
- apercu 2y agoI'm still using my 2017 27" iMac Retina, and vastly prefer it for most things over my 2020 M1 MacBook Pro (which I dislike primarily for not having volume buttons).
- tarsinge 2y agoMy 14” MBP is the perfect size, best MacBook I’ve ever had. To each is own.
- jeppesen-io 2y agoI truly miss my old 12" macbook. It was a great "coffee shop on the weekend and relax" type laptop for myself
