I would argue that our true cruelty of killing other beings is that we specifically farm them in horrible conditions just to be our food. If all meat was hunted from nature, I would have no issues with it.
- TheNewsIsHere 2y agoI’m a fairly staunch animal rights supporter. I think your take is the most reasonable. Related: I hope that Spanish cephalopod farming operation gets axed by law soon for precisely the same reason. Industrialized animal farming is a cruelty factory that (mostly) doesn’t even produce quality product. Senseless by any sane measure.
- tourmalinetaco 2y agoFarming them is fine, we don’t need to exclusively hunt them, and arguably animals are far happier (certainly better fed) in captivity than in the wild. The problem is factory farms, and more loosely poorly maintained farms in general. Additionally breeding chickens, for instance, can be problematic because as big and juicy modern breasts are the scientifically engineered chickens deal with many painful health problems due to their excessive weight. Another cruelty is, especially in regards to hunting, the difficulty is getting a painless kill. At least on a farm you can always guide the cow into a barn, knock it unconscious with a bolt pistol, and kill it humanely from there.
- karmakurtisaani 2y agoIt is true that some farms exist where the animals have fairly decent conditions. Factory farms probably are the norm tho.
- tourmalinetaco 2y agoIt depends on how you define it. In terms of raw number of farms, smaller farms are the norm, and these are the most likely to treat animals with respect. However, in terms of output and number of animals, factory farms are the norm, producing an estimated 99% of American meat. “Nearly all animals farmed in the U.S. (99 percent) are raised on factory farms.”, “ Large-scale farms make up only four percent of the nation’s farms but “control two-thirds of U.S. agricultural land,” reports The Guardian” - https://www.farmsanctuary.org/news-stories/2022-ag-census-factory-farms-expanding/ https://www.farmsanctuary.org/news-stories/2022-ag-census-fa...
- noisy_boy 2y agoMaybe there should be a cap on farm size to avoid large scale factory farming. No chance of it actually taking place though - lobbying/factories being seen as employment provider/non-agenda on political priority are some of the reasons that come to mind.
