Has any of the presenters discussed the relevance of Moore's Law to RISC-V essentially being an open standard for commodity hardware (I think Dave Patterson has argued for this, akin to USB or internet protocol standards)? As in, in the last decade (prior to LLMs, etc.) people thought hardware would be a maturing market because Moore's Law was flatlining, hence it made sense then to have an open ISA instead of ARM IP-based economics. I'm just wondering aloud here.
- panick21_ 2y agoDavid Patterson and Jim Keller have talked about this primarily as far as I know.
- calf 2y agoThanks, I don't know about Jim Keller. Did they discuss Moore's Law specifically, or other relevant factors, or instead did they focus on the standardization argument for ISAs? edit: Ah, I see he's the "Moore's law is not dead" person.
- panick21_ 2y agoBryan Cantrill has as well, but not in relation to RISC-V (not directly at least).
