  > Tech is a merit-based profession, and you must perform well to keep your job. Hmmm... On philosophical reflection, how do we know that's true? I mean, what data would/could show that it's more merit-based than most other kinds of jobs, and is the "merit" being measured really whatever we assume it is? Either way, I'd wager it's overstated, because both employers and (current-)employees have some incentives to play it up.
