What does pihole block that ublock doesn't?
- Larrikin 2y agoEvery single thing that isn't in your browser. App ads, all the trackers from Netflix, Plex, Sonos, etc.
- 112233 2y agoYou think it does, or you know it does? If the later, where can I read more about it? Because, e.g., Apple has official support for allowing apps to easily use DoH/DoT for their connections: https://developer.apple.com/videos/play/wwdc2020/10047/ https://developer.apple.com/videos/play/wwdc2020/10047/ I would be mighty surprised if this was the only such mechanism
- Larrikin 2y agoI know for a fact it does. I can view the logs in AdGuard Plus, the only time I see an ad in Words With Friends or Flipboard on my iPad is when I'm off my Tailscale VPN (which goes through AGP). Apps that serve their ads directly, like YouTube, are not blocked sadly. But there are multiple workaround apps for that on Android atleast. Also some apps don't work with the tracking blocked, like Fox Sports, but I just whitelist the minimum amount needed on a per device basis.
- kwar13 2y agoPihole is a very well documented project and I have been using it for years. It's incredible. Test this page on your phone without an ad block and see how it goes: https://adblock-tester.com/ https://adblock-tester.com/
- 112233 2y agoBut how will that help me know that app is sending tracking information over a TLS connection (with posssibly pinned certificate) to a hardcoded IP or an IPthat it got from vendor server or that it resolved using DoH resolver hardcoded in the app? Because when adding telemetry to the app, do you really think they go out of their way to make it easy to block?
- Larrikin 2y agoWhy talk out of your butt instead of just checking? Ad Guard and Pi hole are free and open source. 90 percent of the time it actually is that easy, there are a ton of logs from my shield and phone that are just entries from places like tracking.hugetrackingcompany.net and ads.adcompany1.net. You don't get everything from a Google or Facebook app, just use a cracked version of their apps in those cases. But most of the blocking is better than none. You can also just continue to use Chrome and be tracked across the internet. Helps pay for those of us that block it.
- 112233 2y agoI'm genuinely asking — how can I check? For browser, firefox + ublock mostly does it. But how do you check if your network is sending telemetry or not?
- kwar13 2y agopihole is network wide, like it can block a ton of ads on your iPhone too and as far as I know there's no way to get ublock origin on an iPhone.
