On some exams in our university 20y ago, we were allowed to use any literature or lecture notes to answer the questions. The thing is, it was a high level abstract algebra. If you don't understand the subject, no amount of literature would help you to answer the questions correctly (unless you find the exact or a very similar question). I believe it's still true today, but with future AI systems even highly abstract math is under the danger.
