First it depends what kind of i7 it is, I have a laptop from 2017 with a budget i7 cpu and it's slow as hell even on basic coding tasks. There's so much variance in i7 cpus that you can't guess from that alone. And then Moore Law might be close to dead but the performance increase of newer cpus isn't, the new Ryzen are pure magic and a big leap forward.
