Revolutionary band MC5 soundtracked US counterculture
- rmason 2y agoI don't know how well known MC5 are around the world. When I was seventeen they were the biggest band in Michigan. Bigger than Bob Segar or Ted Nugent. What I didn't realize then what was different about their music, they were the inventors of punk. Their performances were electric, they had the first hype man in the music world. A bunch of well known rock bands were scheduled to play right on the street during the chaotic 1968 Chicago Democratic convention. As cops clubbed protesters and tear gas was in the wind none of them would take the stage, all except the MC5 who went out and played for hours. They have a new album coming out, first in over 50 years and they're finally getting admitted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Sadly the last two members died this spring so no one from the band will be around to witness it.
