OpenAI Billing Issues - Overcharged Me 14x, No Response – What to Do?
I'm dealing with a frustrating situation with OpenAI billing and wanted to see if anyone else has experienced something similar or has advice.
Here's what happened:
- I used about $20 in API credits one day while testing some software I was working on.
- OpenAI then billed me 14+ times for approximately $30 each.
- This happened despite having auto-pay turned off.
- I tried contacting OpenAI through their website (the only method available) but haven't received any response.
- On the same day, American Express contacted me about fraudulent charges from OpenAI.
I'm currently on the phone with AmEx to dispute all the charges. They've put some on hold, but a few went through.
Has anyone else encountered this kind of overcharging issue with OpenAI? What steps would you recommend taking beyond disputing the charges with my credit card company? I'm concerned about the lack of response from OpenAI and the difficulty in reaching their support.
Any insights or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, HN.
- kordlessagain 2y agoUpdate on OpenAI Billing Issue I've made some progress with the unexpected charges from OpenAI: 1. American Express has been helpful in disputing the charges in bulk. Their website process for disputing multiple charges is quite cumbersome. In total, there were 15 charges, each around $32, dated on the 17th and 18th. 2. I double-checked my OpenAI account settings: - Confirmed that auto-refill is turned off - Verified that the monthly billing limit is set to $200 3. I ran and exported a usage report from the OpenAI site. The report shows: - 3.3M input tokens used, primarily for GPT-4-x models but not the 32K one - The pricing shows $10 per 1M tokens input for the models I supposedly used - Some usage of GPT-3.5 Turbo models - 155K output tokens in total 4. Based on OpenAI's pricing page, my total charges should not have exceeded approximately $30. The discrepancy between the actual charges to my card and the expected amount based on usage is concerning. I'm continuing to investigate and will update as I learn more.
