does anybody have more information on what these "emergency alert tones" are? is it talking about tones on specific frequencies that trigger some sort of special handling of the broadcast, or is it simply that they used a siren sound in an advertisment?
- teeray 2y agoIt’s the three crunchy-sounding SAME tones you hear before an emergency alert broadcast. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Specific_Area_Message_Encoding https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Specific_Area_Message_Encoding

Edit: Actually we 1980s kids are more susceptible to the old two-tone EAS Attention Signal: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Emergency_broadcast_system.ogg https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Emergency_broadcast_syste...
- dmonitor 2y agoThey played those tones? That's incredibly reckless. They're still frequently used on television broadcasts to warn about dangerous storms (hurricanes, etc)
- zoklet-enjoyer 2y agoThat's the sound of summer
- dylan604 2y agoBecause there's no such thing as climate change, we get those earlier in spring, and even into winter (Boxing Day tornado in 2015). So no longer just the sound of summer
- dylan604 2y agoFrom my faded memory, I thought they were referred to as Emergency Broadcasting System[0]. The 90s memories confuse it with Emergency Broadcast Network[1]. Not exactly the same thing though [0] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emergency_Broadcast_System https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emergency_Broadcast_System [1] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emergency_Broadcast_Network https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emergency_Broadcast_Network
