It's still $800 ... OK, I need someone to talk me out of it (esp. as the last thing I need is Yet Another Tinkering Sinkhole :) )
But have you encountered any serious issues so far (I expect to put Linux on it, and I build my own kernels).
- Joel_Mckay 2y agoCould get a pi5 if you want to play with ARM. The documentation and well maintained kernel are kinder to new devs. =)
- kennethrc 2y agoI play with ARM in the Day Jobs but the full laptop form-factor is really appealing
- Joel_Mckay 2y agoDepends on the use-case. In general, most reasonable ARM64 machines are not yet value competitive with the same priced intel+Nvidia_GPU laptops. Application support (MacOS or Win11 on ARM) is usually what hits hard in edge-cases people take for granted as working most of the time. Best of luck, =)
- kennethrc 2y agoLinux is my DD on Wintel (AlderLake); IIRC (K)Ubuntu have those same packages in ARMv8 (and gcc for the rest) so it should 99% be the same for me.
- Joel_Mckay 2y agoOn debian linux distros you will find most, but not all common amd64 packages can be found/built for aarch64. The porting issues are not as spotty as a few years back, but one should check your use-case won't be hit with 3D/codec issues or missing services. Recall qemu does ARM64 just fine... =3
- TiredOfLife 2y agoThe Snapdragon is only 4 times faster
- Joel_Mckay 2y agoLike many things in life, the value proposition of proprietary builds on over-valued hardware is irresistible to some folks. Really depends on the use-case, as some people find custom kernel driver development or maintenance fun. Have a great day =)
- kennethrc 2y agoThankfully I do! Ordered one, it's coming today. Since I have TotalTech if I completely hate it I've got something like two months to give up on it. I don't game so if I can pull it off I can leave my XPS at home; we'll see ....
- conradev 2y agoOn Windows, some subregions of the screen flicker in garbage data sometimes, but very briefly. On Linux, I successfully built a kernel but I have not gotten the firmware working. My WIP is here and I am very much a novice in this area: https://github.com/conradev/x1e-nixos-config https://github.com/conradev/x1e-nixos-config
- kennethrc 2y ago> OK, I need someone to talk me out of it Looks like ARM Holdings has: https://www.reuters.com/technology/arm-holdings-cancel-qualcomm-chip-design-license-bloomberg-news-reports-2024-10-23/ https://www.reuters.com/technology/arm-holdings-cancel-qualc... So I'm taking it back; if Qualcomm loses this case, this chip is certainly abandoned.
- conradev 2y agoQualcomm is (likely) ARM's biggest customer. I don't think either party wants the product line to be abandoned. They are arguing over royalties. Same thing happened with Apple (https://www.apple.com/newsroom/2019/04/qualcomm-and-apple-agree-to-drop-all-litigation/ https://www.apple.com/newsroom/2019/04/qualcomm-and-apple-ag...), with Apple planning to replace Qualcomm's modems in their iPhone SE in the spring after 6 years of engineering: https://www.bloomberg.com/news/newsletters/2024-08-18/why-is-apple-building-own-modem-company-plays-long-game-in-dropping-qualcomm-lzzk8616 https://www.bloomberg.com/news/newsletters/2024-08-18/why-is... I'm sure that everyone is excited to switch to RISC-V, so maybe Qualcomm accelerates those plans.
