I Stopped Teaching My Kids How to Code – and Why You Should, Too

- DHPersonal 2y agoI am not convinced that we are getting anywhere with AI; it's a bubble. https://www.wheresyoured.at/subprimeai/ https://www.wheresyoured.at/subprimeai/
- adamc 2y agoI wouldn't say we are not getting anywhere, but I think the hype is far greater than what is actually being achieved. I think there has been remarkable progress in generating and classifying some kinds of patterns. Nothing I've seen so far makes me think we've cracked the nut of general intelligence, and a lot of what has been achieved is not reliable enough to be used without oversight -- human intelligence to, say, evaluate generated images or music or whatever. The idea that all software engineering jobs are going to disappear strikes me as vastly overstating what we know. (That said, all jobs are temporary for some time-frame... we all have to stay aware of the current market.)
- KingOfCoders 2y agoI don't think these things go together. I enjoy writing poems, one could argue writing poems makes no sense. If you look at coding as a tool to reach a goal, I would agree no need to learn it (like book printing). If you look at coding as a tool of creativity, it is still relevant (just like manual book printing with a manual printing press).
- bbqfog 2y agoThere are reasons to do things besides being able to make money. The world does not need any more crappy music, but I certainly enjoy creating it!
- taylodl 2y agoI think an idea from the 80s is going to resurface: Computer-Aided Software Engineering (CASE) In the modern incarnation of case, architecture and component design is going to be the key human tasks. AI will generate the actual code. The AI will be fed architecture and design languages such as ArchiMate and UML and will generate code. Once that is in play, they'll start working on AI-assisted architecture and design. Will AI ever be able to operate the entire pipeline end-to-end without a human? Most likely not, at least not any time in the foreseeable future. Will there be significantly fewer people involved in software development? Yes. Probably 80+% fewer people. Should you teach your kids how to code? Yes - but coding in the future is what we now call "architecture" and "design."
- thesuperbigfrog 2y agoI will believe that AI can replace software developers when I see major tech companies laying off all their software developer employees that they have replaced with AI. Today's AI and LLMs are great at generating code based on code that has been written before by humans. They do not think. They do not reason. They do not understand problems and therefore cannot create innovative solutions. They are not AGI.
