My previous employer was owned by a large conglomerate as part of its internal startup incubator. It wasn’t a great place to work for various reasons so I left, but just before I decided to leave it was announced it would be put up for sale by the parent company, and subsequently it’s been bought by a private equity firm most people will have heard of. Worth saying that the company was breaking even but not profitable.
From what I’ve heard, from the perspective of employees it’s been a total disaster. They made a load of people redundant, who were doing supporting functions like customer support and onboarding. That means the already stressed out dev team is now having to do more of this work, while their deadlines have not changed. At the start people were optimistic it meant they’d invest into the business, but now they’re talking about a sale in 1-2 years being likely. The firm is “profitable” but everyone worthwhile is heading to the exit, leaving only those who are less useful behind. Their entire R&D/ML team has walked. So what you can see coming is that it’ll sell, and it’ll soon go under or struggle because the people keeping the lights on will either have left or will be looking to leave and through the loss of any institutional knowledge it won’t be sustainable anymore.
