> Golden hashbrowns, gravy-smothered biscuits and crispy waffles with a hearty helping of maple syrup are among the classic Southern comfort foods
There are a lot of foods I associate with the south, but maple syrup is definitely not one of them.
- fat_cantor 2y agoIn the south, the term "maple syrup" is shorthand for "maple-flavored sugar-based syrup-like product"
- Fauntleroy 2y agoThe South... and most other places.
- aidenn0 2y agoIt's been a while since I've been to a Waffle House, but IIRC they offer both a classic and a maple syrup.
- phainopepla2 2y agoMaybe a classic flavor and a maple flavor, but real maple syrup is far too expensive. Waffle House doesn't serve it
- getwiththeprog 2y agoOr 'corn based glucose product'. Sugar is too expensive!
- DowagerDave 2y agoIt's likely maple-flavoured corn syrup, so rest easy :)
- mikestew 2y agoWell, what else do you suggest that I put on my fried corn mush?
- hammock 2y agoBiscuits and gravy are really the only heritage Southern food in that list. Hashbrowns came from diner culture (northeast), waffles came from Belgium (New york and the midwest), maple syrup came from the sugar maple range (some parts of appalachia but mostly the northeast) Early southerners would have put honey or molasses on their pancakes
- nobodyandproud 2y agoKosher-like biscuits and gravy (the oatmeal-like, savory white gravy) was a delightful treat during my late teen years. I haven’t seen credible versions of this in the NYC area. Whereas hashbrowns and waffles are everywhere.
- wil421 2y agoThey don’t even call it maple syrup on the menu, you can rest easy. It’s exactly what you think it is, corn syrup. A huge portion of their customers are late night drunks. They aren’t trying to win awards for their cuisine.
