With gas vehicles it's trivial to keep extra fuel in portable containers, if the situation warrants it. That extra range could easily be the difference between getting out of a disaster zone or not. Heck I'm hardly a prepper or living in a risky area but I have an extra fuel container in my garage simply because I sometimes drive through remote areas and having some extra fuel in the back is a worthwhile safety measure.
