In the UK I've never had an "alert" on my phone. If I got more than maybe, two or three in a year, I'd probably just disable it entirely, if my phone didn't let me, I'd get one that did. If anything really important happens I'll know about it when I hear everyone stampeding out of their house and sirens blaring and whatnot.
