Ask HN: Broke tech founder's guide to user submitted content
Hi hn
I have a startup called muupi that caters mainly to Gen Z menhera, emo, scene, etc. Edgier people
They can't really use the site well until user generated content is visible. An idea I had was to paywall it. Surely if they're paying, there will be no evil. Well, that came with its own can of worms. Turns out that money often causes emotions to run high, and most people like free services.
I need some tech founder to give me real, practical advice on how to deal with user generated content. I want to ensure we aren't distributing nasty shit by accident.
Every time I try to find a lawyer it seems like a big time waste and rabbit hole where they pass me off to a different one ad infinitum because they aren't 100% sure of what to do or say, when I find one they are always exclusively concerned about their $5,000 or $10,000 retainer, they don't care about my users, me, they want the money. Problem, I am broke as fuck and practically insolvent. I had one associated with a well known VC firm recently tell me he knows I have not released a product, because he knows it's impossible to release a product unless you've spent or raised more than $200,000 ... lol
Also, they always seem concerned about jurisdiction which I guess makes sense but we're everywhere and also nowhere, so, yeah.
How should I police user submitted content, there must be some upload as a service that moderates content.
